As a young man in the early 80's, I once worked at a 24 hour donut shop. I worked a shift the started at about 4 am and ended at about noon. One thing that I noticed right off the bat was that there were always a lot of police officers in and out of the shop every day, all day and all night.
Being a know-it-all teenager, I remember thinking to myself that I now had actual concrete proof that the old stereotype of police officers eating a lot of donuts was actually true. I had not been working there very long and my position did not involve waiting on customers or handling money, or even making donuts for that matter. Given my minimal amount of work experience and business knowledge, I was assigned the complicated task of keeping the kitchen, pots, donut fryer screens, floors, windows and toilets clean.
One day, while mopping the kitchen floor, I made some sort of teenager style, smart assed comment to the manager about how negatively the business would be effected if police ever decided to stop eating donuts and drinking coffee. Knowing I would certainly get a corresponding, equally sarcastic response, I was surprised when the manger informed me that "law enforcement officers don't pay for coffee and donuts here". I was shocked. How can it possibly be profitable to give away your product for free.
As it turns out, profit was not the motivation behind giving police officers all the free donuts and coffee they could eat or drink. My manager went on to explain that if there were frequently law enforcement officers in and out of the store 24/7, it would be a deterrent to thieves and other low life. He also pointed out that if you are going to have customers sitting around in the store at 3 am in the morning, it is much better to have a few of them be someone who makes a living putting themselves in harm's way to protect people they don't even know. He also pointed out that "These are people who have chosen to work a job that causes their wives, children and families to live with the fact that when they leave home to go to work, there always exists a possibility they won't be coming home". "The least we can do is give them FREE donuts and coffee".
This was my first memorable business lesson. It was also a good overall life lesson in general. - Always take care of the people who are taking care of you.
