How tight is tight enough? That depends on whether you’re a 250 pound man or a 98 pound woman. If nuts and bolts are over tightened they can stretch threads or shear off completely. If they’re not tight enough, parts become loose and start wearing out or even fall off. Properly torque your steering linkage and suspension bolts is important on any vehicle but it is crucial on a Jeep. Improperly torqued bolts can lead to premature wear on steering and suspension components which typically leads to wandering or flighty steering and even the dreaded DEATH WOBBLE. If you own a Jeep with modified steering or suspension, you should really consider investing in a good torque wrench.
We recommend that you check the torque on steering and suspension nuts and bolts no more than 500 miles after any suspension or steering modification and, at every oil change thereafter. Here is a handy little chart we have provided that lists the torque specifications for the steering linkage and front & rear suspension for a STOCK 2007 - 2014 Jeep JK Wrangler. If you have installed aftermarket parts such as suspension lift kits, adjustable track bars, drag links, control arms etc, you should utilize the torque recommendations provided by the manufacturer of each specific part.
We suggest that every Jeep owner make their own chart similar to the one below and change the specifications for any aftermarket parts that have been installed. If you don't do your own repairs, you can provide this chart for any mechanic that might work on your jeep in the future.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Suspension components with rubber/urethane bushings (with exception of the stabilizer bar) should be tightened and or torqued with the full weight of the vehicle on the wheels at normal ride height. It is EXTREMELY important to have the springs supporting the full weight of the vehicle when the fasteners are torqued. This will maintain vehicle ride comfort and will avoid pre-loading or binding the bushings which will cause premature bushing wear.

As a part of your routine maintenance, it is important that you check and re-tighten any bolt and/or nut that has been loosened or removed to the appropriate torque settings as outlined by the Factory Service Manual or provided by the manufacturer of any aftermarket parts installed. It goes without saying that failure to get a bolt and/or nut tight enough can result in loose or worn out parts. Tightening nuts and bolts too much can also create a problem because you risk breaking them. Knowing the proper torque setting for each nut and bolt on your JK is important especially if you take it off road on a regular basis. If you don't own a torque wrench, or don't feel confident working on your own Jeep, contact Texas Tire Sales at (817) 598-0333 and we can inspect your steering linkage and suspension components for you.
