How to Know What Type of Tire is Right for You?

Tire Types and Tips
At Texas Tire Sales in Weatherford, Texas, we stock thousands of tires. We stock nearly every type and size car, light truck and SUV tire in several leading brands. We provide FREE mounting and balancing as well as FREE rotation, balancing and flat repair for the lifetime of the tires we sell. With so many different types of tires to choose from, finding the right tire to meet your needs can be overwhelming. The choice ultimately comes down to the type of vehicle you drive and what you’ll be doing after you get that new set of tires. You want to pick a reliable tire which meets your needs and is compatible with your vehicle. Tire types such as snow tires and mud tires serve a specific purpose, while all-terrain and all-season tires are fine for most conditions. Read below for a more detailed description of each tire and their optimal uses.

All-Season Tires • A/S – All-season tires are the most common type of tire we sell here at Texas Tire Sales. They offer good traction in the rain and in dry conditions all year long. They also offer a quiet and smooth ride. All-season tires are durable and hold up well against excessive wear. One downside, however, is poor performance in dirt and snow. For that you should go with mud tires or snow tires, respectively.

Snow Tires – If there is a lot of snow on the ground, which there rarely is in Parker County, Texas, snow tires are the way to go. From the tread pattern to the rubber they’re made from, they are engineered to perform in the snow. Unlike traditional tire rubber which becomes hard in the cold, winter tire rubber actually gets softer allowing for improved traction in snow and ice.

All-Terrain Tires • A/T – This type of tire is like all-season tires in makeup except they provide better performance on snow and dirt. There is a trade-off, though, which is that the tread may wear faster than normal. The tread on this kind of tire is typically more aggressive and more prone to uneven wear or cupping. At Texas Tire Sales we offer many brands of All Terrain Tires including Toyo Open Country AT2, Nitto Terra Grappler G2, Hankook DynaPro ATM, Michelin LTX AT2, Goodyear Wrangler, BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 and the Fury Country Hunter A/T, Yokohama Geolander A/T and many more.

Mud Tires • M/T – You see them everyday here in Parker County, Texas... lifted trucks riding high on a massive off-road tires, these may be the tires for you! Mud tires offer the most aggressive tread patterns and are good for pealing up the pavement and getting dirty. They offer better traction in mud and deep snow. The deep tread allows for mud to be dispersed without caking up the tire and losing traction. However, there are two major drawbacks: sound and expense. Depending on the tread design, they can create a lot of road noise on the highway and they cost quite a bit more than other types of tires due to amount of rubber needed to make a mud tire and the size of the tire. We offer Mud tires from several top manufacturers including: Toyo Open Country M/T, Nitto Mud Grappler, BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A, Fury Off-Road, Hankook DynaPro M/T, Mickey Thompson MTZ, Yokohama Geolander M/T and many more.

Rugged/Rough Terrain Tires • R/T - Light Truck tire consumers want a tire that fits in-between the A/T and M/T tire segments. This is where the Rugged Terrain tire comes in. An R/T, or rough/rugged terrain tire, blends the more aggressive look of a mud tire with the more comfortable ride and long-lasting performance of an all-terrain tire. R/T tires almost always enhance the look of the truck or SUV over and above what an original equipment  tire provides and they give the driver greater off-road traction compared with an all-terrain tire. R/T tires are not as noisy nor do they have as harsh of a ride as mud tires. A good "Hybrid" Rugged Terrain tire should have a good balance of on and off-road performance. At Texas Tire Sales, we offer several options when it comes to R/T tires including the Toyo Open Country R/T, Nitto Ridge Grappler, Kenda Klever R/T and the Fury Off-Road Country Hunter M/T.
